This is the story of a boy who becomes orphaned at the age of 9 in the year 1021. He is apprenticed to a barber-surgeon and in his travels he meets a Jewish physician who inspires his desire to become a physician also. This story covers his apprenticeship, travels to Iran disguised as a Jew and quirks of fate which result in his admission to the teaching hospital in Persia. Some characters referred to in this work were real life characters which always makes a novel so much more interesting. I couldn't put this down and everyone who I have loaned this book to has loved it. It's the first novel in a trilogy. Enjoy!
