This, of course, is the indispensable guide to the Sharpe books for it contains the background to each story and a splendid description of the life of a soldier during the Napoleonic Wars. It was written before the Indian stories, so the earliest editions have little on Sharpe's exploits in the sub-continent, but Mark Adkin is constantly updating the book. For anyone wanting to know more about the redcoats, greenjackets, their equipment and achievements, this is the place to start.
