When the historical novels are written about the war in Afghanistan, this book will be a source. Its about the US 2/3 Marines who entered Afghanistan in June 2005. Everybody is somewhat familiar with Red Wings, where the Navy lost more SEALS in one day than any in previous history. Whalers is the follow-up operation that was a total US 2/3 Marine effort and a total success.
Ed Darack, the author, is not some newbie imbed. He was in Afghanistan back when the Soviets were there, is very familiar with the Hindu Kush region, and has written an excellent account of the US 2/3 Marines efforts that went totally unnoticed by rest of the media. This is a great read.
